Red Panda Chef
12" x 12"
Monochromatic Illustration in Orange Tones 2023 Elements & Organization (DSGN 100), SCADNow Dual Enrollment
Explores the intersection of typography and character design through the playful depiction of a red panda in a chef’s role. The artwork was created by arranging the letters from “RED PANDA” into different orientations, where each letter contributes to building the character’s form in an inventive, typographic structure. A limited, yet vibrant, monochromatic palette in orange was chosen to highlight the design elements, where varying tones and values lend depth and bring the chef persona to life in a striking visual harmony.
This piece, developed for the Elements & Organization class at SCADNow in 2023, was part of an exploration in creative problem-solving. The artist first explored various poses and roles for the red panda through thumbnail sketches, ultimately choosing the culinary theme for its whimsy and uniqueness. In creating *Red Panda Chef*, the artist enjoyed the challenge of balancing legibility with form, inviting viewers to notice the unique arrangement of letters that subtly construct the panda's playful expression. This composition not only celebrates the joy of discovery in design but also offers viewers a fun visual puzzle, where each letter reveals a part of the character’s story.
